(ZOMBO/NEBBI) – The Agency for Community Empowerment (AFCE), in partnership with Oxfam Netherlands, is implementing the Power of Voices project in Zombo and Nebbi Districts under its Livelihood Programme. This initiative aims to empower local communities through various agricultural training programs and methodologies, promoting sustainable farming practices.
Wilembe Nikilina, an executive member of Avonu Microstation in Paidha Subcounty, Zombo District, recently outlined the microstation’s five year vision to its members. The plan focuses on long term agricultural development and community empowerment, ensuring that the members have a clear roadmap for achieving their goals.
Meanwhile, Mungujakisa Sunday, a Community-Based Trainer (CBT) attached to Ayanyunga Microstation, has been actively training farmers on the safe use of pesticides. This training is crucial in ensuring that farmers protect their crops while maintaining safety for themselves and the environment.
In Warr Subcounty, Zombo District, members of Pakia Azii Microstation have benefited from training on the Gender Action Learning Systems (GALS) methodology. This approach empowers both men and women to participate equally in decision making processes, leading to more inclusive and effective community development.
In Nebbi District, members of Gonyobendo Microstation in Erussi Subcounty are applying their newfound knowledge in practical ways. They have been busy weeding their cabbage nursery beds, a task essential for ensuring healthy crop growth. Similarly, Mr. Onyuthi Ngabirombo, a member of Avonu Microstation in Zombo District, has been diligently weeding his cabbage nursery bed, demonstrating the dedication of farmers to improving their agricultural practices.
During the training sessions, Gonyobendo Microstation members also learned the importance of sterilizing nursery beds before sowing seeds. By burning the soil to kill weed seeds that might remain, they ensure that their crops grow in a weed free environment, which is crucial for a successful harvest.
The Power of Voices project continues to make a positive impact on the lives of farmers in Zombo and Nebbi Districts. Through ongoing training and support, AFCE and Oxfam Netherlands are helping these communities build sustainable livelihoods, ensuring a brighter future for all involved.
